You are being invited to participate in a study conducted by Bri Young of Antioch University Seattleā€™s Graduate Art Therapy Program. You are being asked if you want to take part in this study. Please read this form and ask any questions that will help you decide if you want to participate in the study. You must be at least 18 years old and live in the US to participate in this study.

Taking part in this study is completely voluntary. Even if you decide you want to participate, you can quit at any time without penalty.

The purpose of this study is to understand if there are therapeutic effects to art journaling the journey of caring for a houseplant.

As part of this study, you will be asked to engage with an art journal daily for two months, which includes art making, writing, and considering your mental health. You may take as little or as much time as you would like. Journals should be uploaded to your confidential online folder weekly. Before you begin this study, you will be asked to complete an initial survey which includes a questionnaire and 3 screening assessments. After one month, you will be asked to complete a mid-way screening, which includes a questionnaire and 2 screening assessments. At the end of the two months, you will be asked to complete a final screening, which includes a questionnaire and 2 screening assessments.

Your confidentiality will be maintained at all times. In follow-up reports and publications, your identifying information will be obscured or omitted.

There is minimal risk involved in participating in this study. It is possible that you could experience some emotional discomfort depending on your experience with the houseplant. Please contact the researcher if you experience any distress. Additionally, if you have allergies, please proceed with these in mind. If you have concerns regarding allergies or allergic reactions from the houseplant or the process of keeping a houseplant, please consult your physician. There is also a possibility that your confidentiality could be compromised. To minimize this risk, you will be assigned a participant identification number.

I hope that you will experience satisfaction from being a part of this study. Your experience will help the Counseling and Art Therapy field develop new, innovative, and accessible therapeutic modalities and interventions to assist clients with their mental health.

The journal you create will be uploaded into your confidential folder weekly. Any art or text with identifying information will be obscured or cropped to ensure your anonymity.

You will not be compensated for participating in this study.
